I am glad to see that there are some resources out there for parents. However I wish it was more advertised. Meaning through out schools and day care centers whether they be in home centers or not! Too often we see kids get left behind because some one thinks they are "unreachable" or a "lost cause" when in reality all they need is a little one on one interaction with some stimulating activities that are age appropriate. We had one child in the center that I work at that was only there for a few semesters. I become kind of close to the mother and on this childs last day she informed me that at his last "preschool" she got called at least once a week saying how disruptive her child was and how they had never had a child like hers before. the child would come home feeling like he was worthless and not smart. when this child came to us he was four and the only four year old that could pronounce all the dinosaurs names correctly and tell us he wanted to be a paleontologist. come to find out he was expected to sit for 2 1/2 hours doing nothing but papers. nothing really to stimulate his mind. luckily he had a good set of parents that new to look else where to help stimulate his mind and keep him on the right track.

I agree with Shutterbugs comment. I think that parenting is something that shouldn't ever be taken lightly and it definitely does not come with a book of "how to's". I also believe that those of us who have the opportunity to be a part in little one's lives should always remember that our actions and teachings can change the future for these little guys.
I am employed at JFK. I agree that early intervention is crucial for helping children with developmental concerns have success in life. I have a daughter who is mildly mentally impaired and I know the frustrations and fears many parents experience. There is so much that can be done at home; the parents just need to be aware of the resources available. Sadly, our pediatrician took the "wait and see" approach which turned out not to be the solution and valuable time was lost. However, I would like to leave some simple advice to child care givers. Many times it is difficult to know a child has learning problems. It is easy to label them as lazy, careless, or stupid. My daughter looked normal, was well behaved, and could fool people for a short time. It is so important to be patient with fearful kids or reluctant learners. Get to know them first before forming conclusions.
Thank you for your comment Kathy. It is also very unfortunate how many physicians take a "wait and see" approach.
I agree that you should get to know them. However, they are still a person with feelings and that should be taken in to consideration. Just because they have something wrong with them doesnt mean that they are not capiable of doing things. They will be able to do more if you let them. They want you to help but don't do it all for them.
Being a parent first and formost, it is nice to see that we have unlimitted resourses. Haveing delt with ADHD and Autism first hand at my daycare and with members of my family it nice to now that we have a place to go that can help us understand what makes these children think the way they do. this has helpd me first hand on dealing with children with there cognitive development.
One of the reasons I'm involved in child care is because of what one of the teachers told my mom about me. "She'll grow out of it" I had difficulty speaking at the time and my mom went on to seek help for me against the teachers will. I know 2 other kids that she told their parents the same thing and yet they still struggle today with it. As we are all learning about how to handle each situation as they arrive there is more and more ways we can give advice and point parents in the right direction. I am gald to see that my daycare tries to post information about getting help or finding more information in our town. But everyone always has room for improvement. :) carolyn
Marie J ... After having 3 children of my own it becomes more apparent that children do develope with different tallents and at different speeds. When you are in a working environment you must also look at the background of a child. Taking into consideration whether a child is an only child with an attentive parent or from a more busier mother with 3 or more children. A childs development is greatly enhanced with a one to one tuition plan. My second child is more of an artistic than accedemic nature and although was very forward in speach and other areas at 18 months was extremely lacking in accedemic skills when she started school. The first school she attended they left her as the "excuse child" of the class and we found her development very slow. We took her to another school and explained the difficulties where she was then given a one to one teaching and with a continued programe at home that was far easier to follow her skills developed. Working for a preschool for a year with this experience in mind gave me great insight to detecting a childs problematic areas. And yes normally without any medical problems a child can simply be falling behind in development just because of frustration and misunderstanding.
I also agree with Shutterbug, parents often lose hope because they are unsure of what is out there. Advertising early intervention and other resources would be helpful and hopeful for all of these parents. It is so important for children with special needs to get as much help as possible early on. In today's world the resources are availabe for developmentally delayed and disabled children, but parents are often left in the dark and unaware of these helpful solutions.
I definitly agree with 'Shutterbug Photography's' comment as well. I think that training such as these should become more reachable for parents-maybe a good idea would be for hospitals or doctor offices to offer these classes/training & info for "free" so that they are better equiped. I think if everyone were a little more educated and had this information under their belt-it would be benefitial for parents & children. I'm a childcare provider & I dont think it would be a bad idea for it to be mandatory for every childcare provider-whether certified, licensed or not-to have this knowledge & training. I think we need to raise the bar and the standard. I know I have been eagar to get more certifications, training and skills-not just because I am a parent but because I am imparting into the lives of children every day & I want them to reach their full potiential in life and be a success. One of the best things about this site is that it is "free" which means it is much more accessable to everyone. I'm thankful
I am shocked at how many times you hear someone say oh he/she will grow out of it. But what if they never do, and how do they know if it not something more serious. The thing that get to me is when nothing is done for the child and the issues they have continue because nothing is done and no further investigation is done on the child that is going through the development issue, they are so innocent and can not get the help for themselves and have to go through the hard times that children that have development issues go through.
I found this child development article to be true. I have a 19 year old who graduated last year with a 3.5 and my 8 year old just received her 2nd student of the month for this year. They are emotionally happy and talk to me with any concerns they have. There are kids who did not receive one at all this year. I asked him why and he said well their are justified learning disabilities however, most of the time it is their environment they have been raised in and parent involvement, not only in the classroom but being supportive in any way they can. This article rings true for me because I know I am not a perfect parent but I do believe that by my nurturing my kids from birth and being involved has made a big difference in their lives. I have also been a single mom for many years. It can be done! :)shannon t
I'm happy to see that are resources out there for parents. Im going to be new at parenting and i think that This is a good idea. That they are giving information to parents that might other wise have no Idea on the Developmental health of their children. I like how they are telling some ways that you can help stimulate your child to learn.
im am a new dad of almost a month and i like that we can get on this web site and get further info on our childs behavior or why they act the way they do and how we can control it or deal with it
My name is Don M and I too am glad to share with others the concerns we have as both parents and chilc care providers.
I believe training and education is key to us being our maximum not just for the children we serve but also for our own developement.
It has been said, when we know better we can do better.
I would like to hear about more father's being involved in teir children's lives. I have heard it said that a man never stood so tall as the man you see bending down to help a child.
You are right. A good father figure, if not the father himself, someone else, is critical for the healthy development of children. There are a number of things which a good father will often do better than a mother, just as there are things which a good mother will usually do better than a father. You can read and discuss more at: http://responsiblepracticalparenting.blogspot.com/2010/08/fatherhood.html
Knowing that there are resources out their for parents makes me feel confident about the work people do for our kids.
This makes me feel confident about the work people do for our kids and their families
I was surprised to see some of the different developmental milestones. One at stuck out was that by age 1 your child should be helping to get dressed. Here I was thinking my daughter was so advanced and it turns out she is right on track! I agree with shutterbugs, this information should be advertised more than it is. It is important for parents to be aware of certain things while there is time to help rather than waiting until it is too late and your child missed milestones way beyond what they should have.
I strongly agree with shutterbug photography am very passionate with children and deeply concerned about their development. but i really hope this is well advertised more than it is today so that any parent or care giver who is not giving attention to any abnormality in the develepment of a their child can quickly get help early enough.
I am happy that there are organizations that help with early developmental issues and that there is testing and screening for such things. Especially because I've noticed that some parents get really paranoid because there child isn't doing something at the exact time that the books say they are supposed to. This way a lot of times parents can be put at ease that everything is ok and they will learn what they need to on their terms. And if there is something wrong then at least the parents are able to find resources to help.
I am so glad there is help for those who need it. Why do it take long sometimes to get the appropriate help and diagnosis they need? I don't have any children but i would like to receive advice from those who can help me improve knowledge on children. I can give advice on certain things that i know about children simply because i have been around them almost all my life. I currently work at a daycare i'm learning new things everyday. I want to learn more about how to deal with children that have disabilities.
There are different reasons for a diagnosis taking a long time. Sometimes it is because it can be difficult to pin point the problem. Sometimes for younger children it can take a while for the issue to fully present itself. There is a great deal of information on these pages that will help you know more.
Ok i see thanks for the information
I have a question why is it that u have to wait 6 months before u can give a baby water
That is a question for a pediatrician or the Health Department. I could venture a guess but for something like this I would want you to ask a medical professional.
I just want to say I really like this web site. It has some really good links and great information for a first time parent.:)TY
All I can say is wow. That video was amazing.
The Video was so amazing. It blows my mind how the baby is so intricately formed in the Mother's womb. It was really fascinating to watch.

I competely agree with Christina Rauschert that training such as these should become more reachable for parents-maybe and great idea for hospitals or doctor offices to offer these classes; such as corporating it with the Lamaze class would be a good idea, not only parents participate in child birthing and preparing them better equipped. And I also agree with Annonymous blogger -May 10, that resources need to be available continually out there for parents and school and day care givers are the child constant resources of information as they grow, learn and develop.
The pictures and videos taken with micro magnetic imagery are really wow. nice to have videos like this there are things i learned that i did not know like when a child is born they have over sixty thousand miles of vessels inside there little bodies.
well there alot of resouces for parents and prviders out there
I agree with just about everything said. I wish there were more resources advertised out there for parents as well as day cares and schools. Working in a day care setting myself its hard to watch children who are in desperate need of help or to be even diagnosed, go unnoticed or not taken care of.
We have a child at the center I work at, that is very behind. We have talked, informed and gaven information out to the parents but they claim their is nothing wrong with their child. What can we do from here? We work with the child but not much has improved. What other steps can we take?
Get permission from all the parents and use the Ages and Stages Questionnaire on all the children. If you can get the parent to fill it out, they may come to the realization on their own that their child could use some additional help to get caught up.
It is amazing how technology can provide us with images of the awesome creation of a little person from conception to birth. I was really surprised when I saw that after the first cell division the divisions occur every 12 minutes. When I think about the fact that my twins were split into separate embryos after two to eight divisions, I did not realize that it would have happened on the same day either way! In terms of Public Health and Child Development, if you are in CA then First 5 provides a lot of free resources and classes for children and adults.
I watched the video featuring Alexander Tsiaris called Conception to Birth. In the video Tsiaris explains that "two simple cells become the magic of you". He marvels at the development of the brain and the heart. Tsiaris expresses that he wonders what genius invented this development of a human. What are your thoughts? Do you believe we were created by a holistic devine, such as God, or something else?

Beautiful video. I wish all parents had the opportunity to see intricacies and miracles that take place to bring us our beautiful children.
As for Public Health and Child Development it is great that theses resources are available, I just hope the people that need them most have access.
What a beautiful video. I truly believe that only GOD could perform such a miracle. What a wonderful resource. All parents expecting their first child should see this video to realize how marvelous the birth of another human being is. Having a child is a great responsibility and rewarding. Yvonne
I am happy to know that there are resources for help. However they do need to be advertised more. All children are different they learn in many different ways. What may be good for one child will not work with another. Some learn faster then others. But now a days it the ones that learn slower are punished. The schools put all this pressure on this poor kids but yet they don't want the teachers to take the indiviual time with the child that is greatly need. I know how as a single parent I try to praise my daughter for her efforts and know that she is trying her best. I try to help her in all ways that I know how. But I am one person and sometimes need help
That was an interesting video, it's fascinating to get a glimps of how all the small individual cells come together to make a precious little baby. I had no idea that there was so much material and support stuff out there until recently. Being a parent is defiantly difficult especially when you have someone that your supposed to be able to rely on that really isn't there. I wish I would have realize that there was all of this out there years ago it would have been so much help. Especially since I've got 4 kids 3 with ADHD and one with ADHD plus aspergers. He's on the high functioning end of it and I count my blessings everyday because it is sometimes very difficult and I just want to shut the door and cry, but then I think about all the other ppl that have to deal with so much more than me and it motivates me to keep pushing forward I love my kids to death can't let myself give up.its hard sometimes because when my son puts his mind to something he's going to try and make it happen no matter what even if it's not something hat can be done right then . One technique I use one.day will not hold out the next day for the same exact situation., and it becomes hard to think of new ways to Handel things .
Its great that you guys are educating parents on what is on track learning and what your child should be doing at certain ages alot of people dont know exactly what theyre child should be doing and at what paste this definitely is a learning experience i would recommend to all parents everywhere!
